New york city: Egypt has been awarded a prestigious international accolade by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Interagency Task Force on the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (UNIATF) for its efforts in preventing and combating obesity. The recognition was part of the 2025 Awards, presented during the annual ceremony at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly and the fourth High-Level Meeting on Non-communicable Diseases.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the award was accepted by Mohamed Hassani, Assistant Minister of Health and Population for Public Health Initiatives and Projects, on behalf of Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population. Egypt also played a significant role as a co-chair at the 10th annual High-Level Meeting, which focused on "Accelerating action in obesity prevention and management," organized by WHO and UNIATF.
During the meeting, Hassani stressed the importance of international cooperation in tackling obesity, a significant global health issue. He called for comprehensive strategies that include prevention, early detection, treatment, and community awareness to achieve long-term, effective outcomes.
Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesperson for the Ministry of Health and Population, highlighted that Egypt's recognition for the second consecutive year underscores the country's extensive efforts in addressing obesity. He reiterated that combating obesity and non-communicable diseases is a priority for Egypt, emphasizing the ministry's commitment to continuing national efforts, fostering international collaboration, and sharing Egypt's experience as a model for other nations to promote a healthier and more equitable future.
