Egypt: Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, chaired a crucial ministerial session of the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) focusing on the latest developments in Sudan and Somalia. This session, held at the AU headquarters, was a testament to Egypt’s continued efforts under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi to support these nations both bilaterally and multilaterally.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting was attended by significant figures, including the AU Commission chairperson and foreign ministers from several African countries such as Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Angola, Ethiopia, and others. Representatives from Algeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) were also present, alongside UN special representatives for Sudan and the AU.
Abdelatty commended the Peace and Security Council’s active role in monitoring developments in Sudan and Somalia. He reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for the African Union’s efforts and its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The minister highlighted the importance of dialogue with Sudan’s legitimate leadership to resolve ongoing crises and advocated for a comprehensive humanitarian truce leading to a permanent ceasefire.
In addition, Abdelatty noted Egypt’s significant role in hosting events supporting Sudan, including a political forum in July 2024 and a meeting in January 2026 in collaboration with the UN. These efforts aim to bolster Sudan’s unity and security.
Regarding Somalia, Abdelatty praised progress in state-building efforts and reiterated Egypt’s support for Somalia’s unity. He condemned external attempts to destabilize the region and emphasized the importance of sustainable funding for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The session concluded with the Council adopting statements supporting the unity and sovereignty of Sudan and Somalia, with participating delegations expressing appreciation for Egypt’s leadership in promoting peace and security in Africa.
