Egypt and Sri Lanka Discuss Strengthening Economic Cooperation

Cairo: The General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI) CEO Hossam Heiba recently welcomed Sri Lanka's Ambassador to Egypt, Sisira Senavirathne, to explore ways to enhance bilateral investment and trade relations between the two countries.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting also focused on mechanisms to activate the joint ministerial committee aimed at advancing economic relations. This initiative builds on the momentum generated by the recent foreign ministers' meeting in August. During the discussions, GAFI CEO highlighted Egypt's ongoing efforts to improve the investment climate and the qualitative shift currently underway.

Both parties acknowledged the success of existing Sri Lankan investments in Egypt. Ambassador Senavirathne expressed Sri Lanka's interest in expanding these investments, particularly in textiles and ready-made garments, sectors where Sri Lanka has significant expertise. He emphasized Sri Lanka's readiness to share knowledge for mutual benefit.

The ambassador also referenced the deep historical ties between the two nations, dating back to the 13th century, when the first Sri Lankan trade missions arrived in Egypt. In conclusion, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation in various sectors, including textiles, financial technology, and tourism, with the aim of boosting bilateral investment growth.
