Cairo: COP24 resumed for its third day, focusing on Mediterranean protection and the blue economy. Dr. Manal Awad, Egypt's Minister of Local Development and Acting Minister of Environment, inaugurated the ministerial segment of the 24th Conference of the Parties to the Convention for the Protection of the Mediterranean Environment against Pollution.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister Awad highlighted the shared responsibility of Mediterranean countries in ensuring the sea's sustainability for future generations amidst challenges like marine pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. The opening was attended by key figures including Dr. Ibrahim Saber, Governor of Cairo, and representatives from 21 Mediterranean countries and international organizations.
Awad emphasized the role of the Barcelona Convention in marine protection since its inception in 1976. She stressed the need for accelerated implementation, innovative solutions, and strengthened financing to tackle environmental challenges in the Mediterranean region.
The Egyptian government has actively developed policies to support a participatory blue economy, enhance marine monitoring, and establish new marine reserves. Awad noted that hosting the conference underscores Egypt's commitment to protecting its coastline, which is crucial for sectors such as tourism and maritime transport.
Choosing the Blue Economy as the conference theme reflects its potential as a development driver, contingent on sustainable marine resource use. Awad expressed hope for the adoption of significant decisions, including a Regional Framework for Climate Change and plans for biodiversity and marine protected areas.
The "Cairo Declaration" aims to promote environmental sustainability, a fair blue economy, and community participation, especially among youth and women. Ambassador Peter Thomson, UN Special Envoy for Ocean Affairs, emphasized the importance of regional efforts to preserve ocean health and the Mediterranean Sea, advocating for adherence to international commitments.
