Alexandria: Bibliotheca Alexandrina Director Ahmed Zayed announced Egypt's pride in initiating the first International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage, emphasizing the nation's commitment to preserving cultural heritage and fostering international cooperation.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Zayed highlighted during a ceremony that underwater heritage has evolved beyond archaeology to encompass scientific, environmental, and developmental concerns, especially in the face of climate change and rising sea levels. The event also marked the 25th anniversary of UNESCO's 2001 Convention on Underwater Cultural Heritage.
UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Nayef Al-Fayez noted that Alexandria was selected for the inaugural celebration due to its significant history in maritime exchange and the abundance of underwater archaeological sites in Egypt.
