Alexandria: Egypt holds a leading global position in heritage and archaeology, enabling it to play a unique international role in promoting knowledge of history and underwater cultural heritage, President of the Scientific Committee of the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) John Geurts said.According to State Information Service Egypt, in exclusive remarks to MENA during an event marking the International Day for Underwater Cultural Heritage at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Geurts said Alexandria offers a unique example of the archaeological and historic treasures beneath the sea, reflecting the city's links to successive civilizations and Mediterranean cultures.He highlighted ongoing cooperation with Egyptian diving and rescue authorities to develop standards for responsible engagement with underwater heritage sites.Geurts also called for greater involvement of recreational divers through a new 'citizen science' standard, enabling them to receive training and work alongside resear chers to help protect underwater cultural heritage for future generations.
