Supply Minister and WFP Egypt Sign MoU to Enhance Food Security and Social Protection

Cairo: Under the directives of the political leadership to bolster Egypt's food security and social protection systems, Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Sherif Farouk met with Country Director of the World Food Programme - Egypt Office, Ruwad Halabi, to discuss enhancing joint cooperation.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the two parties signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) covering March 2026 to June 2028. The agreement aims to develop the food supply system, improve supply chain efficiency, support the wheat flour fortification programme, and strengthen quality assurance systems. Additionally, the MoU focuses on advancing food assistance, enhancing data management, and supporting decision-making aligned with the National Strategy for Food Security and Nutrition and Egypt Vision 2030.

Farouk highlighted that the ministry manages one of the region's largest food support systems and emphasized the MoU as a framework for technical cooperation, capacity building, and operational development to ensure transparency, efficiency, and service quality for citizens.

Halabi affirmed the WFP's commitment to supporting Egypt's social protection and food security efforts by providing technical assistance, international expertise, and capacity building for vulnerable groups.

The signing ceremony was attended by senior officials from both the ministry and WFP, reflecting a shared commitment to sustainable cooperation, strengthening the food system, and supporting national economic and social development goals.
