Presidential Advisor: “Genome Project” Marks Milestone in Future of Egypt’s Medicine, Sports

Cairo: Advisor to the President for Health and Prevention Affairs Mohamed Awad Tag El-Din stated that the Sports Genome Project represents a fundamental pillar of studying the Egyptian genome as well as a remarkable leap in the future of Egypt's medicine and sports.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Tag El-Din emphasized the special sponsorship and direct support these projects receive from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi. This initiative is part of the state's strategy to lead scientific innovation and transition towards precision medicine.

Tag El-Din explained on Extra News channel that the genome is the complete genetic map of a human being, determining each individual's genetic characteristics, including physical and mental traits, as well as genetic predispositions to certain diseases. He noted that every age group, environmental background, or nationality possesses distinctive genetic traits, which explains why some individuals exhibit unique capabilities or exceptional characteristics. This distinction is often referred to as genetic traits, and modern science has been able to link many of these traits to genetic structure.

The genome project aims to understand how individuals respond differently to medications and includes analyzing the causes of diseases and their spread in specific regions despite similar environmental and social conditions.

Regarding the Sports Genome Project, Tag El-Din highlighted that Egypt has athletes with unique physical and mental abilities in both individual and team sports. Genetic analyses of these athletes revealed inherited traits that contribute to high-level performance and strategic thinking during competitions.

A ceremony was held to celebrate the receipt of the final reports of the Sports Genome Project and the launch of the new phase of the Gene-Next Test on Monday, May 26, 2025. High-level officials, including Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour, Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Sobhy, Deputy Prime Minister for Human Development and Minister of Health and Population Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, and the head of the Armed Forces Center for Medical Research and Regenerative Medicine, Mohamed El-Gohary, attended the event.
