Cairo: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on Saturday inspected restoration work in Cairo's historic district as part of a wider plan to revive the capital's heritage neighborhoods.
According to State Information Service Egypt, at Bab Zuweila's Haret Al-Roum, Urban Development Fund head Khaled Siddiq stated that the project aims to preserve the area's UNESCO-listed urban fabric near Sultan Al-Mu'ayyad Mosque, Mohamed Ali Sabil, and the Khayamiya crafts zone. Deputy fund chief Mostafa Abdel-Wahab reported that upgrades have been completed for 30 buildings, including 27 residential blocks, two commercial buildings, and an Al Azhar institute, in addition to full structural restoration of five apartment blocks. He noted that the works support traditional crafts, improve living conditions, and protect the area's architectural character.
Abdelbaset Maher, head of the fund chairman's technical office, mentioned that four new residential buildings have been constructed to replace unsafe structures, and work is underway to refurbish the facades and roofs of 54 more buildings. Prime Minister Madbouly also toured the nearby Khayamiya market, engaging with artisans about their production and marketing needs, and stated that the state plans to help promote their goods through handicraft fairs. He pointed out that the soon-to-open Al-Fustat Park would host a heritage crafts market.
The prime minister visited one of the restored historic homes overlooking Khayamiya and mentioned that such units could attract strong tourist interest if offered for short-term rental.
