Washington: The foreign ministers of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE, and the United States have issued a joint statement emphasizing the urgent need to restore peace and security in Sudan. The statement, made following intensive consultations, highlights the severe humanitarian crisis and the regional risks posed by the ongoing conflict.
According to Union of OIC News Agencies, the ministers have committed to a shared set of principles aimed at ending the conflict in Sudan. These principles stress the importance of Sudan's sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity as foundational elements for peace and stability. The ministers have agreed to monitor the implementation of these principles closely and are prepared to engage further to ensure full compliance by the conflicting parties.
In their statement, the ministers addressed the issue of external military support, which they believe exacerbates the conflict and contributes to regional instability. They emphasized the necessity of ending such support to facilitate the resolution of the conflict. The ministers also pledged to support a negotiated settlement involving the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces.
The joint statement outlines commitments to protect civilians, ensure humanitarian aid delivery, and create conditions for broader security in the Red Sea region. Additionally, the ministers intend to address cross-border security threats posed by terrorist and extremist organizations.
The ministers reaffirmed their dedication to restoring peace in Sudan and alleviating the suffering of its people. They expressed readiness to collaborate with African and Arab countries, the United Nations, and other international partners to achieve these objectives. The discussions also touched on urgent humanitarian needs and early recovery efforts, with a call to the international community to address these issues.
Support for ongoing peace initiatives, such as the Jeddah Process led by Saudi Arabia and the United States, was also expressed. The statement acknowledged Egypt's role in the Sudanese Civil and Political Forces Forum, with plans to continue consultations leading up to the Quadripartite Ministerial Meeting in September 2025.
