Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam has directed all relevant departments to enhance their readiness to proactively manage the anticipated severe weather conditions. These directives come in response to forecasts predicting heavy rainfall on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, and Thursday.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the minister issued a statement on Wednesday, highlighting the importance of on-the-ground monitoring by ministry officials. This includes activating both the central emergency operations room and local emergency rooms in various governorates, as well as closely observing the condition of canals and agricultural drains.
The minister underscored the need for continuous monitoring of water levels and flows across the irrigation and drainage network. He advised taking necessary measures to lower water levels in canals, anticipating a decrease in water demand due to the rainfall.
Additionally, Sewilam instructed officials to assess the status of pumping stations to ensure they are prepared to handle any increase in water volumes in canals and drains. He confirmed the readiness of emergency centers, affiliated with the mechanical and electrical department, to deploy emergency units to areas that may experience water congestion.
Furthermore, the minister emphasized the continued oversight by the irrigation authority of flood protection structures in governorates that are likely to be affected by heavy rainfall and potential flash floods.
