Cairo: Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam announced on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, that the national project to regulate the Nile is a crucial part of Egypt's strategy to preserve the river, protect water resources, and ensure sustainable development.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam, speaking at a ministry meeting on Tuesday, outlined plans to create updated digital maps of the Nile's main riverbed and branches. These maps will utilize advanced technologies such as remote sensing, drones, GIS, and artificial intelligence to improve water management and decision-making processes.
The minister also shared progress in eliminating illegal structures along the Rosetta branch of the Nile. To date, 334 encroachments have been removed across the Monufia, Qalyubia, and Beheira governorates. This initiative is part of Egypt's broader 'Irrigation 2.0' modernization project.
Sewilam stressed the importance of establishing clear river management lines and conducting thorough surveys of riverbank lands. These measures are designed to ensure compliance with Egypt's Water Resources Law No. 147 of 2021 and to enhance infrastructure safety.
