Cairo: Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour met with European Union Ambassador to Egypt Angelina Eichhorst, alongside Dr Ayman Farid and Dr Salma Yousry, at the Ministry of Education building in New Cairo. The meeting focused on enhancing joint cooperation and expanding the Egyptian-European partnership to benefit mutual interests and sustainable development in Egypt.According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister Ashour emphasized the strategic importance of the relationship between Egypt and the European Union, particularly in higher education, scientific research, and innovation. He praised the achievements of joint initiatives and highlighted Egypt's commitment to deepening cooperation within the framework of the comprehensive strategic partnership. The Minister reiterated the priority of developing human resources as a key element for sustainable development.The Minister noted Egypt's expanding relations with European countries, underscoring the partnership's found ation on fairness, mutual respect, and shared trust. He referenced the successful visit of French President Emmanuel Macron to Egypt, which resulted in 42 memoranda of understanding in education and research. The Minister highlighted the establishment of European university branches in Egypt and the continued cooperation in higher education and research, positioning Egypt as a regional hub.Dr Ashour discussed Egypt's progress in joining the "Horizon Europe" programme, a major EU initiative supporting research and innovation. He explained that Egypt submitted a request to join in March 2024, leading to negotiations and an agreement in principle. This accession would enhance cooperation in sectors like renewable energy, food security, digital transformation, health, and education.The meeting also covered the importance of student exchange and increased scholarships, aimed at enriching scientific and cultural exchange. Ambassador Eichhorst expressed the EU's eagerness to deepen the partnership, focusing on a reas beneficial to students and graduates, and acknowledged Egypt's progress in higher education.Ambassador Eichhorst highlighted Egypt as the EU's largest strategic partner in the Middle East and Africa, and second-largest globally. She emphasized the importance of science diplomacy and knowledge exchange. Both parties agreed on the need for cooperation in knowledge transfer, innovation, and linking academia with industry, aligning with the National Strategy for Higher Education and Scientific Research.The discussions included renewing the PRIMA agreement, promoting cooperation in the Mediterranean region in areas like water, energy, and sustainable agriculture. The meeting concluded with a focus on joint research projects and exchanging best practices in scientific fields critical for development.
