Egypt’s FM Leads AU Informal Talks on Sudan’s Crisis

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty, chaired an informal consultation session held by the African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council (PSC) at the ministerial level, focusing on the developments in Sudan.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the session saw participation from the Sudanese Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Mohieldin Salem, as part of Egypt’s chairmanship of the Council’s activities during February. Despite Sudan’s suspension from the AU, Egypt emphasized the necessity of Sudan’s involvement in the discussions. Abdelatty stressed the importance of considering Sudan’s national perspective on the current situation and exploring ways to support its path to stability.

The meeting was attended by 13 foreign ministers and state ministers from countries including Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Angola, Botswana, Ivory Coast, Equatorial Guinea, Cameroon, Eswatini, Gambia, and Uganda, along with the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Chairperson of the AU Commission and the Commissioner for Peace and Security also participated, alongside non-member states such as Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, and Burundi.

Representatives from other organizations, including the Arab League, the United Nations, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), were also present. Abdelatty highlighted the significance of the session as a platform for direct dialogue between the Peace and Security Council and the Sudanese government. He emphasized that Sudan’s stability is crucial for preventing regional chaos, the spread of weapons, and rising terrorist threats.

The minister expressed hope that these discussions would contribute to developing a shared vision to end the conflict and achieve stability. He reaffirmed Egypt’s unwavering support for Sudan’s unity, territorial integrity, and national institutions, condemning recent violations in Al Fasher and Kordofan. Abdelatty voiced solidarity with the Sudanese people, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive ceasefire, effective humanitarian aid, and a purely Sudanese political process, while supporting international coordination efforts.

During the meeting, the Sudanese Foreign Minister briefed the Council on the latest developments and humanitarian challenges in Sudan. He expressed hope for intensified coordination with the Council to support de-escalation efforts, strengthen humanitarian initiatives, and create favorable conditions for an inclusive political process to restore Sudan’s security and stability.
