Cairo: Egyptian diplomat Nada Daraz said that her election to the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) reflects strong international confidence in Egypt's efforts to empower women and promote gender equality.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Daraz mentioned in remarks to Radio Nile that CEDAW, established under the 1979 UN convention, plays a key role in monitoring the implementation of women's rights worldwide. She noted that Egypt was among the earliest supporters of the treaty and contributed to its drafting.
Daraz emphasized that her priorities include strengthening the committee's effectiveness and supporting global efforts to eliminate discrimination against women while ensuring balanced representation of cultural and regional perspectives.
She highlighted the importance of Arab, African, and Muslim representation within the 23-member expert body, adding that Egypt's presence helps defend regional priorities.
Additionally, she stressed that women's empowerment remains a national development priority in Egypt under President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.
