Egypt: EgyptAir, Egypt's national carrier, announced adjustments to its flight routes following the complete closure of Greek airspace due to a technical issue affecting air traffic control and navigation systems.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the closure has disrupted EgyptAir's operations, along with those of other airlines traveling to or through Europe and the United States, as Greek airspace serves as a crucial corridor for these routes. The airline is implementing operational measures to reroute flights around the affected area, acknowledging that this process may take time due to the strategic significance of the region for flights to Europe and North America.
EgyptAir emphasized that it is vigilantly monitoring the situation via its Integrated Operations Control Centre (IOCC) and continuously assessing the impact on flight schedules. The airline also assured that it will keep affected passengers informed through its sales channels and customer service offices both in Egypt and internationally.
In October, Egyptian Minister of Civil Aviation Sameh El-Hefny highlighted that EgyptAir currently operates flights to 82 international destinations from Cairo, four international routes from Alexandria, and six domestic destinations. The airline has expanded its reach for the fiscal year 2024/2025, adding new destinations such as Zurich, Prague, Mogadishu, Djibouti, Abidjan, Taif, Tabuk, and Misrata.
Looking ahead to the fiscal year 2025/2026, EgyptAir plans further expansion, aiming to serve 85 international destinations from Cairo and five from Alexandria, with new additions including Venice, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The airline projects to operate 42,854 flights during the year, carrying approximately 11.88 million passengers and offering 16.2 million seats.
