Cairo: Egypt has welcomed the United Nations General Assembly's decision to appoint former Iraqi President Barham Salih as UN High Commissioner for Refugees for a five-year term beginning in January 2026.
According to State Information Service Egypt, in a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, Egypt expressed its full confidence that Salih's extensive political experience will strengthen the UNHCR's role in protecting the rights of refugees and displaced people amidst growing global humanitarian challenges.
Egypt pledged full support for the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and affirmed eagerness to continue cooperation with the new leadership to enhance international solidarity and refugee assistance.
The statement highlighted that Egypt currently hosts over 10 million foreigners, including migrants and asylum seekers. It highlighted Egypt's commitment to providing essential services to these populations as part of its regional leadership and international moral obligations.
Egypt expressed deep gratitude to the outgoing High Commissioner Filippo Grandi, praising his dedicated efforts and significant contributions to the international response to displacement during his tenure.
