Egypt Urges Unified Regional Dialogue at UN Conference on ME WMD-Free Zone

New york: Egypt took part in the sixth session of the UN conference on establishing a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction, held in New York, Egypt's Permanent Mission to the United Nations said on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

According to State Information Service Egypt, in his address, Egypt's UN Ambassador Osama Abdel Khalek reaffirmed Cairo's long-standing commitment to supporting regional and international efforts to enhance security and stability in the Middle East. He underscored that creating a zone free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction was a core element of the 1995 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review and Extension Conference decision, which formed part of the basis for the treaty's indefinite extension.

Abdel Khalek praised the progress made in earlier sessions of the conference, saying they had built stable institutional structures, procedural frameworks, and working methods that strengthened the credibility of the process. He called on all states in the region, without exception, to engage in transparent dialogue aimed at reaching a legally binding agreement to establish a WMD-free Middle East.

Egypt welcomed the wide support this year for a UN General Assembly First Committee resolution on creating a nuclear-weapon-free zone in the Middle East, as well as the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference's adoption of a resolution on applying IAEA safeguards in the region. Both initiatives were introduced by Egypt and reflect broad international backing for the same objective pursued by the conference, Abdel Khalek said.

He stressed that the WMD-free zone conference offers a unique, inclusive, and non-politicized platform for negotiation, intended to reinforce regional security, prevent proliferation, and support universal adherence to the NPT, particularly amid rising tensions in the region.

Egypt emphasized the need to maintain momentum behind the UN-led process and to ensure that the shared goal of establishing a WMD-free Middle East is achieved through the free will of the region's states.
