Egypt Leads Inaugural 2026 IOSCO Emerging Markets Meeting


Cairo: Chairman of Egypt’s Financial Regulatory Authority (FRA), Islam Azzam, chaired the first virtual meeting of 2026 for the Growth and Emerging Markets Committee (GEMC) of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) on Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The meeting brought together regulators and capital market representatives from emerging and developing economies to deliberate on market development, financial stability, and international regulatory cooperation.



According to State Information Service Egypt, the GEMC represents over 75% of IOSCO members, comprising 90 members and 24 affiliate members, including several G20 economies. In his address, Azzam highlighted the committee’s critical role in bolstering emerging markets through regulatory cooperation, the exchange of expertise, and capacity-building initiatives.



The meeting agenda included discussions on global market developments, challenges in debt markets, financial technology, artificial intelligence, digital assets, and regulatory risks impacting emerging economies. Participants also explored strategies to enhance supervision tools, increase market transparency, and develop adaptable regulatory frameworks in response to fast-paced financial and technological changes.



Azzam underscored the necessity of international cooperation among regulators to support capital market development and reinforce financial stability.
