Egypt’s Water Infrastructure Rehabilitation Advances with Fum Bahr Mois Barrage Project

Cairo:Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Hani Sewilam emphasized the importance of rehabilitating water infrastructure to modernize Egypt's water distribution system. This modernization aims to transition from a water-level-based to a flow-based management approach, aligning with the second-generation water management system objectives.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister Sewilam received a report from Abeer Thabet, Head of the Reservoirs and Major Barrages Sector, detailing the progress of the Fum Bahr Mois Barrage rehabilitation in Qalyubia Governorate. The project has reached 42% completion.

The report highlighted that dredging and embankment grading have been completed along a one-kilometer stretch behind the old barrage. Additionally, stone pitching has been done on the embankments between the old and new barrages and within the water diversion area on the right bank. Moreover, concrete walls on both banks and dewatering wells have been completed, and excavation of the construction pit is currently underway.

Maintenance work is being conducted simultaneously on the old Bahr Mois Barrage to ensure the continuation of necessary water flows throughout the project. Sewilam instructed officials to adhere to applicable standards, strengthen quality control, and conduct necessary tests to ensure compliance. He also emphasized the importance of preserving the historic character of the approximately 150-year-old structure and called for coordination with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities for restoration work.
