Cairo: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates hosted the 38th meeting of the Board of Governors of the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) in Cairo. The meeting was inaugurated by Assistant Foreign Minister for Multilateral Affairs and International Security Amr El-Sherbiny and saw the participation of UNESCO World Heritage Centre Director Lazare Eloundou, as well as the permanent representatives of South Africa and Namibia to UNESCO, among other board members and executive secretariat of the fund.
According to State Information Service Egypt, discussions at the meeting highlighted the fund's major accomplishments over the past six months. Notably, the fund contributed to the nomination of four African heritage sites, which were successfully inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in July 2025. Additionally, three African sites were removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger, marking significant progress in heritage preservation efforts across the continent.
The fund also made strides in capacity building by training 160 individuals to enhance the capabilities of African national heritage institutions. Furthermore, financial grants were provided to four countries to support heritage protection, research, and training initiatives. As part of its outreach efforts, the fund organized two heritage events in Zambia and Kenya, attended by approximately 450 experts, which led to the adoption of two declarations on world heritage and sustainable development.
Concluding the meetings, the foreign ministry, alongside the Supreme Council of Antiquities and the Tourism Promotion Authority, arranged visits for the participants to the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum. These visits were well-received by attendees, who commended them as exemplary models for the preservation of national heritage.
