Egypt and Sudan Strengthen Ties in Electricity Sector Cooperation

Cairo: As part of the joint efforts to support and develop cooperation and partnership with the Republic of Sudan in the fields of electricity and renewable energy, and to work on completing the second phase of the Egyptian-Sudanese electricity interconnection project, "Toshka 2/Wadi Halfa," with a capacity of 300 megawatts, Dr. Mahmoud Asmat, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, received Dr. Mohieldin Naeem, the Sudanese Minister of Oil and Energy, and his accompanying delegation at the ministry's headquarters in the administrative capital, in the presence of Ambassador Imad El-Din Mustafa Adawi, Ambassador of the Republic of Sudan to Cairo.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting also featured the presence of Engineer Jaber Desouki, Chairman of the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company, and Engineer Mona Rizk, Head of the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, along with the Sudanese delegation and several ministry officials.

During the meeting, Dr. Mahmoud Asmat praised the depth of Egyptian-Sudanese relations, their distinction throughout history, and the historical ties between the two brotherly peoples. He reviewed the capabilities of the electricity and renewable energy sector and discussed the possibility of meeting the energy sector's requirements in Sudan for electrical transformers of various capacities, mobile support units, and other measures to provide sufficient electricity supply in many areas, especially in the north of the country.

He also discussed cooperation in training, technical support, renewable energy, and the necessary studies to benefit from the Egyptian experience in this field, as well as the possibility of sending a number of experts to assist in preparing technical specifications and measurement devices for developing a wind atlas.

Both ministers discussed ways to support and enhance partnership and cooperation in the fields of electricity and renewable energy, training, and benefiting from Egyptian expertise in solar and wind energy, as well as providing electricity to population and industrial clusters in the Republic of Sudan.

The meeting also addressed ways to cooperate in rehabilitating the electricity network in Sudan and implementing an urgent emergency plan to provide the necessary electricity in some areas during the agricultural harvest season. They worked on devising a plan to rehabilitate generation stations and transformers.

The meeting also discussed updates on the implementation of the second phase of the Egyptian-Sudanese interconnection project and taking the necessary measures to install its special equipment, enhancing technical and vocational training programs for electricity sector workers in Sudan, and utilizing the expertise of the electricity sector in Egypt to improve the efficiency of electrical systems and update infrastructure.

Several future projects in the energy sector were also touched upon, including expanding the use of renewable energy sources, establishing solar stations in various areas, and the potential to benefit from the Egyptian private sector in executing projects.

Dr. Mahmoud Asmat affirmed that the electricity and renewable energy sector has the expertise, competencies, and successful experiences in implementing urgent emergency plans, and that there is cooperation with the Sudanese side and coordination within the framework of the existing interconnection line to achieve regional integration in the electricity and energy sector.

He pointed out the importance of exchanging expertise in renewable energy and rehabilitating and reconstructing electrical networks, maximizing the benefit from natural resources, and emphasizing the commitment to enhancing cooperation with Sudan as part of joint efforts to achieve energy security in the region and develop the energy infrastructure in both countries.

He highlighted the focus on promoting the use of renewable energy, achieving environmental sustainability, and reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, commending the distinguished relations between Egypt and Sudan, and continuing to provide training programs for our brothers in the Republic of Sudan on the latest global technologies in electricity and energy, clarifying the joint work between the two countries to provide electricity supply and meet the requirements of sustainable development plans.
