Cabinet Affirms Continuous Support for Maize Crops to Enhance Food Security

Cairo: The Cabinet's Media Center announced on Thursday that the State remains committed to supporting the maize crop, recognizing its critical role in achieving food security and alleviating the financial burdens on farmers. The move comes amid rumors suggesting that governmental support for maize cultivation had been withdrawn, leading to a decline in farming activities.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the Media Center refuted these claims, clarifying that the government is actively working to bridge the gap between local production and imported yellow maize, primarily used for animal feed. This effort includes incentivizing farmers to expand their cultivation through various support programs.

The Center further highlighted a statement from the Ministry of Agriculture, noting that maize accounts for approximately 40% of concentrated animal feed, essential for red meat and dairy production. Additionally, maize constitutes 60% to 70% of poultry and fish feed, underscoring its significance in the livestock production system and the broader agricultural economy.

The Media Center reported a significant expansion in yellow and white maize cultivation across several governorates, including Minya, Fayoum, and Sharqia. This expansion is part of the government's initiative to provide improved seeds and agricultural guidance services.

Reports from the Ministry of Agriculture indicate positive initial assessments, showing the crop in good condition. Efforts to combat pests like the fall armyworm have been effective, thanks to technical recommendations. The Ministry continues to conduct field inspections as part of the national campaign aimed at enhancing productivity nationwide.

In addition, the State's horizontal expansion plan involves newly reclaimed lands, which are crucial for maize cultivation. These areas benefit from suitable fertilization and irrigation systems, leading to increased production and decreased dependency on imports.

The current agricultural policy focuses on expanding yellow maize cultivation and enhancing productivity through the promotion of high-yield hybrid varieties.
