Key topics included economic cooperation, the Russian Industrial Zone in Egypt, and developments in the Middle East.
Borisenko underscored Russia’s appreciation for Egypt’s diligent efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region. He expressed anticipation for Egypt’s participation in the upcoming Russian-Arab Summit scheduled for October, highlighting that this summit will be an opportunity to bolster cooperation between Russia and Arab states, given the deep historical ties connecting both sides.
Regarding economic cooperation, Borisenko noted that during a recent visit by Egyptian Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade Hassan Khatib to Moscow, discussions were held to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields. This took place during meetings of the joint higher committee. Concerning the Russian Industrial Zone, technical agreements necessary for the project’s implementation were signed in Moscow, with facilities expected to begin establishment throughout 2025. Total Russian investments in the zone are projected to reach $7 billion.
On the trade front, Borisenko reported that bilateral trade between Egypt and Russia is developing rapidly, reaching a record level of over $9 billion last year. In the first quarter of 2025, Egyptian exports to Russia reached nearly $1 billion. He highlighted that Egypt imported over 10 million tons of wheat from Russia in 2024, covering more than 80 percent of Egypt’s needs and establishing Moscow as a stable supplier of wheat to the Egyptian market.
In terms of tourism, about 1.6 million Russian tourists visit Egypt annually, with 18 to 20 flights operating daily between Egypt and Russian cities. Borisenko also addressed the ongoing conflict in Gaza, affirming Russia’s total rejection of attempts to resettle Gaza residents and emphasizing Moscow’s strong support for efforts by Egypt and mediators to halt the war.
