Cairo: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi met with Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Dr. Mahmoud Esmat, and Advisor to the President for Financial Affairs Lieutenant General Ahmed El-Shazly to discuss the progress of renewable energy projects in Egypt.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting focused on the State’s plan to increase the reliance on renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on fossil fuels to promote sustainable development. Dr. Esmat outlined strategies to achieve a 45% share of clean energy in Egypt’s energy mix by 2028, with plans extending through 2040.
President El-Sisi reviewed the progress of the second phase of the 500-MW ‘Obelisk’ solar project in Nag Hammadi, set to integrate into the national grid this month. The meeting also covered the 900-MW wind power project in Ras Shukeir, scheduled for 2027, and the 1,700-MW solar power project in Minya Governorate. Additionally, the establishment of energy storage stations in Minya, Alexandria, and Qena, with a total capacity of 4,000 MW, was discussed.
The President emphasized the urgency of adhering to project timelines to ensure the stability and resilience of the national electricity grid. The discussions highlighted Egypt’s potential in solar and wind energy and the need for private sector partnerships in renewable energy initiatives, particularly the Gabal El-Zayt wind power complex, one of the largest in Africa.
Dr. Esmat also addressed efforts to localize the manufacturing of equipment for renewable energy production and the promotion of solar cell systems in industrial facilities to diversify energy sources and relieve the national grid.
President El-Sisi underscored the importance of expanding renewable energy projects, reducing conventional fuel dependence, and establishing a balanced energy mix. He directed efforts to enhance investment opportunities in the energy sector to support Egypt’s development goals as a regional green energy hub.
