Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam discussed with Professor Kenzo Hiroki, a personal advisor on water studies to Emperor Naruhito of Japan, ways to strengthen coordination and joint cooperation between Egypt and Japan. This meeting was part of the preparations for the third interactive dialogue ‘Water and the Planet,’ scheduled as part of the 2026 United Nations Water Conference.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the discussions emphasized the importance of continued joint coordination, consultation, and exchange of views to unify positions and adopt joint ideas. The two sides agreed to hold a joint ministerial meeting soon to further discuss the matter. Minister Sewilam expressed appreciation for Japan’s efforts in supporting the ‘Water and the Planet’ dialogue and promoting water and climate issues internationally.
Sewilam highlighted the necessity of continued coordination between the two sides regarding the messages and outcomes of the dialogue to achieve consensus before presenting them internationally. He also stressed building on the outcomes of the 2023 UN Water Conference, focusing on enhancing practical implementation tools for the 2026 conference.
The discussions included the action plan for the ‘Water and the Planet’ interactive dialogue, ongoing coordination efforts, key programs and initiatives, and mechanisms for coordination with participating countries and international partners. Preparations for an event during the Fourth Dushanbe Water Action Decade Conference in Tajikistan on 26-27 May were also reviewed.
Furthermore, the meeting addressed the upcoming ministerial meeting of host countries and co-chairs scheduled for next July, reviewing current participation levels and ongoing arrangements.
