Planning Minister Highlights SCZONE as Key Hub for Global Trade and Logistics

Cairo: Minister of Planning and Economic Development Ahmed Rostom highlighted the strategic importance of the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZONE) as an integrated hub for trade, logistics, and production during a high-level roundtable on April 21, 2026. The minister emphasized that SCZONE is a crucial strategic asset for Egypt, serving as a platform where these sectors converge to bolster the economy.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the roundtable, which was attended by a delegation from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), government officials, and private sector representatives, focused on utilizing SCZONE to enhance Egypt's global economic competitiveness. The discussions occurred at a critical time amid shifting global trade dynamics, geopolitical tensions, and pressures on supply chains.

Rostom underscored the complexity of issues related to competitiveness, resilience, and global market integration, stressing the need for collaborative solutions. He highlighted SCZONE's strategic location along a corridor that handles approximately 30 percent of global trade and 20 percent of international container traffic, underscoring its pivotal role in global supply chains.

The minister detailed the zone's infrastructure, which includes six ports, four industrial zones, multimodal transport links, and advanced digital systems. These features facilitate efficient goods movement, enhance investment predictability, strengthen supply chain continuity, and improve infrastructure integration.

Rostom noted that SCZONE's value extends beyond its location, as it effectively connects production, logistics, and exports within a cohesive system. Traffic through the Suez Canal has rebounded significantly, with growth rates reaching 8.6 percent in the first quarter and accelerating to 25.6 percent later in the year. This recovery has reduced transaction costs, alleviated supply chain bottlenecks, and increased investor confidence.

Additionally, the minister reported a 19 percent year-on-year increase in container volumes and a 16 percent rise in vessel traffic during the first half of the year, pointing to the ongoing recovery and growth within the SCZONE.
