Irrigation Minister Stresses Need for Clear Policies to Combat Accelerating Climate Change

Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam emphasized the urgent need to implement projects and adopt clear policies to mitigate the negative impacts of accelerating climate change. He noted that concerted efforts are required by executive and research entities both within and outside the ministry to formulate scientifically based solutions.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam held a meeting with ministry officials to review the status of projects focused on protecting Egypt's Mediterranean coastline, especially in Alexandria. The aim is to adapt to climate change effects and enhance the forecasting capabilities of the ministry's Planning Sector Forecast Center and the Forecast Center at the Water Resources Research Institute for predicting extreme weather events.

The minister directed relevant ministry bodies, including the Shore Protection Authority, the National Water Research Center, and the Planning Sector, to continue monitoring climate change and extreme weather phenomena affecting Egypt's northern coasts. This monitoring is crucial to assess the impact on Egyptian beaches and waterways in the northern Delta, ensuring a swift response by the ministry and other concerned state agencies to take necessary preventive measures promptly.

Several coastal protection projects are currently underway. These include the Alexandria Coast Protection Project (Phase One) from Bir Masoud to Al-Mahrousa, spanning 2 kilometers, and Phase Two, covering 600 meters to protect the Corniche wall and road in the Loran area while restoring the sandy beach. Additionally, breakwaters are being constructed in the city of Ras El Bar in Damietta, and the second phase of works to protect Al-Obayed Beach in Marsa Matrouh is in progress.
