Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty held a phone call with Senior Advisor to the US President on Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs Massad Boulos to discuss Egypt-US bilateral relations and a number of regional issues of mutual concern.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Foreign Ministry issued a statement on May 18, 2026, expressing appreciation for the depth of the strategic partnership between Egypt and the US. This partnership was described as a key pillar for supporting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa. Both parties showed eagerness to enhance joint cooperation at political and economic levels and to maintain close coordination and consultation on regional matters of common interest.
The call addressed ongoing efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East. Abdelatty highlighted the importance of resuming dialogue between the US and Iran to reach understandings that would help restore calm. He emphasized prioritizing dialogue and diplomacy to mitigate tensions and prevent the region from experiencing the repercussions of a widening conflict.
Discussions also covered developments in Libya, where Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s support for Libya’s unity and stability. He stressed the importance of unifying national institutions and achieving a comprehensive political settlement through a Libyan-led process, which would facilitate simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections at the earliest opportunity.
Regarding Sudan, Abdelatty emphasized preserving the country’s unity and territorial integrity, supporting its national institutions, and rejecting any parallel entities. He stressed launching a Sudanese-owned political process to end the conflict and achieving a humanitarian truce as a preliminary step toward a sustainable ceasefire, facilitating humanitarian aid delivery.
The call also covered the Ethiopian dam issue, Egypt’s water security, and developments in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region. Abdelatty reiterated Egypt’s rejection of unilateral measures, emphasizing water security as an existential issue for Egypt. He underscored the importance of respecting international law and preserving regional states’ unity and sovereignty to support regional security and stability.
Boulos praised Egypt’s role in supporting security and stability in the Middle East and Africa, expressing appreciation for its efforts to de-escalate tensions and contain regional crises. He affirmed the US administration’s commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership with Egypt and maintaining close coordination to address shared challenges.
