FM Highlights Growing Egypt-Greece Ties, Calls for Stronger Migration Cooperation

Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty hailed the deep-rooted strategic ties between Egypt and Greece. He praised the remarkable progress in bilateral relations, particularly after they were elevated to the level of a strategic partnership.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the remarks came during Abdelatty's meeting on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, with Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris to discuss ways of enhancing bilateral cooperation, particularly in the fields of migration and labor.

Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tamim Khallaf said Abdelatty underscored Egypt's keenness to build on the current momentum to further expand cooperation across various fields. The foreign minister stressed the importance of maintaining close coordination in combating illegal migration, calling for a comprehensive approach that addresses the security, development, economic, and social dimensions of the issue, while tackling its root causes.

He also reviewed Egypt's efforts to combat illegal migration and secure its borders, noting that these measures have yielded tangible results and made the Egyptian experience a successful model for regional and international cooperation in this field, contributing to security and stability in the southern and eastern Mediterranean. In this context, Abdelatty highlighted the importance of fair burden-sharing within the framework of the Egypt-European Union Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership, reflecting the shared responsibility in addressing migration challenges.

The meeting also tackled means of enhancing cooperation in legal migration and labor mobility. Abdelatty stressed the importance of implementing the seasonal labor agreement signed between Egypt and Greece in November 2022 and developing its implementation mechanisms, including expanding the sectors covered by the agreement to serve the mutual interests of both countries and create more job opportunities for Egyptian workers.

Regarding the Egyptian community in Greece, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to following up on the conditions of its nationals abroad, stressing the importance of continued coordination with the Greek side to provide them with the necessary support, safeguard their rights, and facilitate their integration into Greek society.

For his part, Plevris praised the steady development of Egyptian-Greek relations, expressing his country's appreciation for Egypt's pivotal role in promoting security and stability in the Mediterranean and the Middle East. He also reaffirmed Greece's continued support for Egypt in addressing current regional challenges and expressed his country's commitment to further strengthening bilateral cooperation, particularly in migration and labor issues.
