FM Engages with FAO Director-General on Strategic Partnership and Food Security

Cairo: Dr. Badr Abdelatty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expatriate Affairs, met with Mr. Shou Dongyu, Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), on the sidelines of the third edition of the FAO World Conference in Egypt.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the meeting commenced with Minister Abdelatty expressing appreciation for FAO's role in efforts to end hunger by 2030, highlighting the strategic partnership between Egypt and the organization. He reiterated Egypt's interest in hosting a global center for grain storage, supply, and trade, emphasizing the country's geographical and logistical advantages. The ongoing technical cooperation between the organization and national authorities to complete the project's feasibility study was also discussed.

Minister Abdelatty reviewed Egypt's initiatives under 'Egypt Vision 2030,' aimed at improving living standards and reducing hunger among vulnerable groups. He mentioned the updates to the strategy and action plan for sustainable agricultural development, the national food strategy, and the 'Decent Life' initiative. Egypt's participation in regional and international efforts to support food security and nutrition, as well as activities organized by the FAO, was also emphasized.

Furthermore, the Foreign Minister discussed cooperation between the Egyptian Agency for Partnership for Development and the FAO, initiated through a memorandum of understanding signed in January 2024. This cooperation aims to support sustainable development in African countries, particularly in transforming agricultural systems and enhancing food chain resilience for food security.

Additionally, Minister Abdelatty reiterated Egypt's commitment to contributing to global efforts for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially considering the impacts of climate change and regional and international political and military crises on production and supply chains.
