Egypt Leads Africa in Drug Regulatory Standards

Cairo: Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA) Chairman Ali el Ghamrawy participated in the AIRIS 2025 conference on Artificial Intelligence in pharmaceuticals, held in South Korea and organized by the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety and the World Health Organization. Addressing the attendees, el Ghamrawy said that Egypt is the largest pharmaceutical market in Africa, covering over 90% of its domestic needs, and the only African country to achieve a WHO Level 3 classification for its drug and vaccine regulatory systems.

According to State Information Service Egypt, el Ghamrawy described Egypt as a main entry point to African markets and called for stronger international cooperation to ensure safe, effective, and innovative medical products. For his part, Osama Hatem, EDA Assistant Chairman for Policies and International Cooperation, joined a session on drug policy development, noting Egypt's interest in adopting global best practices in AI-based medical product regulation.

It is noteworthy that AIRIS is an annual platform that gathers regulators, health organizations, and industry leaders to discuss AI in pharmaceuticals and share regulatory experiences.
