Cairo: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty received a phone call from Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Thursday, May 7, 2026. The discussions focused on enhancing bilateral relations and addressing regional developments.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Abdelatty emphasized the positive relationship between Egypt and Italy, expressing Egypt's commitment to advancing all facets of their bilateral ties. He highlighted the importance of supporting economic and investment relations, as well as boosting trade exchange with Italy.
The conversation also included an exchange of views on the region's rapidly changing developments. Abdelatty updated his Italian counterpart on Egypt's efforts to de-escalate tensions, in collaboration with regional and international partners. He underscored the necessity of supporting the US-Iran negotiations and ongoing efforts to achieve a political settlement.
Additionally, the call addressed the situation in the Gaza Strip. Abdelatty stressed that regional escalation should not detract from implementing the second phase of the US plan, which involves deploying an international stabilization force, ensuring uninterrupted humanitarian aid, and initiating early recovery and reconstruction programs.
Regarding Lebanon, Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt's steadfast support for Lebanese sovereignty and territorial integrity, insisting on the need for a full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territories and complete implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Italian Foreign Minister Tajani commended Egypt's constructive role in reducing regional tensions. Both ministers agreed on the importance of continued coordination and consultations, emphasizing that diplomatic solutions are essential for maintaining regional and global security and stability.
