Pretoria: The Egyptian Embassy in Pretoria has organized a meeting via teleconferencing, bringing together Chairman of the Supreme Constitutional Court's (SCC) Body of Commissioners Emad Tarek El-Bishri, and Acting Deputy Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa Mbuyiseli Russel Madlanga, among others, to discuss ways to promote constitutional cooperation.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Bishri, who also serves as acting secretary-general of the SCC-affiliated Center for Constitutional Research and Studies for African Countries, highlighted opportunities to benefit from the center's role. The center was established as one of the outcomes of the 6th Cairo High-Level Conference of Chiefs of Constitutional Courts, Supreme Courts, and African Constitutional Councils, held in September 2022.
The meeting offered an important opportunity to discuss opportunities for cooperation on issues related to the work of the constitutional courts in both countries, paving the way for promoting joint cooperation and coordination to serve bilateral and African interests, according to a statement by Egyptian Ambassador to South Africa Ahmed Sherif.
The two sides concluded the meeting by agreeing to work to identify potential cooperation areas and activities, both at the bilateral and continental levels, taking into account the two countries' leading role in Africa and their robust constitutional norms.
