Washington: Egypt and Greece have engaged in discussions to enhance their strategic partnership in the energy sector with a focus on liquefied natural gas (LNG) trade and re-export to European markets. The talks were held between Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi and Greek Minister of Environment and Energy Stavros Papastavrou during the East Mediterranean Gas Forum 2026 meetings.
According to State Information Service Egypt, both parties highlighted the depth of strategic relations between Egypt and Greece, viewing them as a model for regional cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean, especially in the energy sector. Badawi expressed appreciation for the progress in Egyptian-Greek energy cooperation, emphasizing the need to transition from planning to implementation to achieve tangible results through regional projects that enhance energy security.
The ministers underscored the roles of Egypt and Greece in advancing the objectives of the East Mediterranean Gas Forum (EMGF). They noted that the forum's updated long-term strategy offers a significant opportunity to accelerate regional integration, develop projects, and attract investments.
In terms of natural gas, both countries welcomed advancements in expanding cooperation in LNG trade and marketing, stressing the importance of further collaboration to bolster energy security. They highlighted the joint company established between the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company and the Greek Copelouzos Group as essential for regional cooperation and linking Eastern Mediterranean energy markets with Europe.
The discussions also included agreements to continue cooperation in gas trade, transport, and regasification, utilizing existing infrastructure in both countries to support energy supplies to European markets. Additionally, potential joint pilot projects and knowledge exchange in low-carbon technologies were discussed to support energy transition efforts and emissions reduction.
Both parties agreed to explore organizing a specialized Egyptian-Greek energy business forum to facilitate direct engagement between companies and explore new investment opportunities. They also considered establishing a high-level energy working group between Egypt and Greece.
