Egypt Adopts Advanced Model in Water Management, Says Minister

Cairo: Egypt’s experience represents an advanced model in integrated water resources management, highlighting its success in meeting water needs through a comprehensive system based on diversified tools and solutions, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam said. Speaking at a high-level ministerial roundtable held as part of the Fifth Istanbul International Water Forum in Turkey, Sewilam said Egypt’s approach reflects strong governance and efficient use of available resources. The session brought together ministers and senior officials responsible for water issues at the international level.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam pointed to mounting global challenges in the water sector amid climate change and population growth, stressing the need for integrated strategies to enhance the resilience and sustainability of water systems. He said climate change poses an additional challenge requiring stronger adaptation measures, both nationally and through cooperation with Nile Basin countries, underscoring the importance of coordination and consultation in managing shared water resources in a way that safeguards the interests and rights of all parties.

The minister reviewed Egypt’s efforts to implement the ‘second generation of the water system 2.0,’ which focuses on upgrading infrastructure, expanding water reuse, applying smart management systems and digital transformation, and using modern technologies to monitor and manage water resources, alongside strengthening governance and raising public awareness on water conservation.

He stressed that transboundary cooperation is a key pillar for achieving water security, calling for adherence to international law, confidence-building, and the pursuit of mutual benefit without causing harm, as well as integrating water issues into global climate action. Sewilam also said the 2026 United Nations Water Conference presents an important opportunity to advance the global water agenda, highlighting Egypt’s active role in supporting international cooperation and knowledge exchange.

He added that achieving water security requires genuine international partnerships based on cooperation and trust to support sustainable development and enhance societal stability.
