Cairo: The East Nile Monorail commenced its inaugural passenger services, marking a significant milestone in Egypt's latest green transport initiative. The project, aimed at enhancing connectivity between New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital (NAC), seeks to provide a more efficient commute for the area's workforce and residents.
According to State Information Service Egypt, Transport Minister Kamel al-Wazir conducted a thorough inspection of the monorail's operations as it began service. The monorail runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, covering a 16-station route that includes key locations such as Al-Mousheer Tantawy, One Ninety, Air Force Hospital, and Arts and Culture City, where passengers can interchange with the Light Rail Transit (LRT).
The monorail's driverless, fully electric trains are equipped with air-conditioned cabins, LCD information screens, and CCTV for passenger convenience and safety. Additionally, the Ministry of Transport emphasized the accessibility features of the project, which includes elevators, tactile paving, and dedicated spaces with safety locks for passengers with disabilities.
The introduction of the East Nile Monorail is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on major roads and reduce carbon emissions by offering a high-speed alternative to private vehicle use. The initiative represents a significant step towards sustainable transportation solutions in Egypt.
