Communications Minister: Mobile Spectrum Capacity Doubled in Single Deal

Cairo: Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat announced that Egypt has allocated new spectrum capacity equivalent to all frequencies granted to mobile operators over the past 30 years, marking an unprecedented step in the telecom sector. Speaking at the launch of the National Spectrum Strategy, Talaat stated that the deal, valued at around $3.5 billion, includes the allocation of 410 MHz to mobile operators, representing the largest spectrum agreement in the history of Egypt's mobile communications sector.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the expansion builds on the launch of 5G services in June 2025, ensuring network readiness for future digital applications. Talaat emphasized that the move is a strategic step to reshape Egypt's telecom infrastructure through public-private partnership. He further mentioned that the communications sector has been the fastest-growing sector in Egypt for eight consecutive years, contributing around 6% of GDP, with digital exports reaching $7.4 billion, driven by growth in outsourcing services.

Earlier, Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli witnessed the signing of the largest spectrum allocation deal in the history of Egypt's telecommunications sector. The deal was signed during a ceremony at Mohamed Ali Palace in Cairo's Shubra district under the supervision of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. It involves the allocation of 410 MHz of new spectrum to Egypt's four mobile operators, matching the total spectrum assigned since the launch of mobile services in the country.

The agreement is part of the National Spectrum Strategy (2026-2030) and aims to support the sustainability and development of telecom infrastructure, enhance service quality, strengthen 5G services, and boost market competitiveness and digital readiness.
