Cairo University Launches Real-Time Air Pollution Monitoring Station

Cairo: Cairo University has inaugurated a new real-time air pollution monitoring station equipped with advanced technology capable of measuring a comprehensive range of air pollutants and environmental indicators for the first time, marking a significant upgrade to the university's environmental monitoring system.According to State Information Service Egypt, Cairo University Vice President for Community Service and Environmental Development Mohamed Refaat said the new station marks a qualitative leap in the university's environmental monitoring capabilities, thanks to its advanced instruments, which enable the measurement of a range of pollutants and environmental indicators for the first time.He said the university would continue to enhance the technical and scientific capabilities of the Center for Risk Reduction and Environmental Studies and Research and to expand its monitoring network, thereby reinforcing its role as a key partner to the state in environmental protection and community service.Refaa t made the remarks during the inauguration of the real-time air pollution monitoring station at the Center for Risk Reduction and Environmental Studies and Research, as part of Cairo University's strategy to become a green and sustainable university and to strengthen its contribution to national efforts to protect the environment and address climate change.The station, installed on the roof of the Chemistry Department building at the Faculty of Science, operates around the clock using state-of-the-art environmental monitoring equipment to track air quality 24 hours a day, according to a statement issued by the university on Thursday.'The station will provide accurate scientific data to support environmental studies and research and help inform evidence-based decision-making,' the statement read.It added that the station has been commissioned as part of the National Ambient Air Pollution Monitoring Project, which has been managed and operated by Cairo University's Center for Risk Reduction and Environmen tal Studies and Research on behalf of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency since 1997.The project is one of Egypt's leading national initiatives for monitoring ambient air quality and issuing the country's daily air quality bulletin, the statement said.The new station is equipped with the latest environmental monitoring devices introduced into Egypt's air quality monitoring network for the first time, including instruments to measure black carbon, methane, carbon dioxide and ultrafine particulate matter (PM1), in addition to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and inhalable particulate matter (PM10).'The expanded monitoring capabilities are expected to support environmental policymaking, contribute to health risk assessments and help reduce emissions,' the statement added.
