New alamein: Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, the Prime Minister, held a meeting Thursday at the government headquarters in New Alamein to follow up on the implementation plan for desalination plants in the northwestern coastal region. The meeting was attended by Engineer Sherif El-Shorbiny, Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Dr. Sayed Ismail, Deputy Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities, Major General Asem Shokry, Deputy Chairman of the Holding Company for Water and Wastewater, and Engineer Ahmed Omran, Deputy Chairman of the New Urban Communities Authority for the Utilities Sector.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the Prime Minister confirmed that the government is monitoring the progress of water desalination efforts to enhance expansion in this field, a key pillar of sustainable development. He noted that the state is working to leverage private sector capabilities in this important area, particularly by relying on the latest technologies to improve desalination plant efficiency.
The Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Communities explained that ongoing efforts are focused on maximizing the benefit from alternative water resources. "We are working according to the directives of the political leadership, within a clear and specific action plan in terms of timelines and targets," he stated.
During the meeting, the Minister of Housing reviewed the status of desalination plants in the northwestern coastal region. He outlined the consolidated executive plan for plants to be established by 2050 as well as the urgent plants required to meet needs until 2030.
Regarding the consolidated implementation plan for desalination plants to be established by 2050, the minister reviewed the total current capacity of existing plants. He also reviewed the targeted capacity for the period from 2025 to 2035, and then from 2035 to 2050, to be achieved through expansions of these plants or the establishment of new ones.
