Damietta: Petroleum and Mineral Resources Minister Karim Badawi inspected the Damietta liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on Friday to review its operational readiness as Egypt seeks to maximize the value of its LNG infrastructure and reinforce its position as a regional energy trading hub. Badawi stated that both the Damietta and Idku LNG facilities, as the only two gas liquefaction plants in the eastern Mediterranean, are strategic assets that bolster the state's energy strategy and economic competitiveness.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the minister emphasized that Egypt's integrated LNG infrastructure enhances its capability to attract investment and broaden regional partnerships. He highlighted ongoing cooperation with Cyprus to process and re-export gas from Cypriot offshore fields through Egyptian facilities as a testament to the robust potential of Egypt's energy sector.
During his visit, Minister Badawi also toured the Energos Winter floating regasification unit at Damietta Port. There, he reviewed its operations, noting that the vessel is one of four regasification ships currently operating in Egypt. These ships play a crucial role in receiving imported LNG, converting it back into natural gas, and feeding it into the national grid to help meet domestic demand.
