Minister Sewilam Highlights Efforts in Coastal Protection for Nile Delta

Damietta:According to State Information Service Egypt, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam has reaffirmed the ministry's dedication to employing international expertise and the latest scientific methods for protecting the Nile Delta's coastline. This initiative aims to develop sustainable, nature-based solutions to address the impacts of climate change.Sewilam received a report from Mohamed Ghattas, Chairman of the Shore Protection Authority, detailing the progress of a feasibility study. This study focuses on safeguarding the most vulnerable coastal areas of the Nile Delta using environmentally friendly natural materials. The minister emphasized that coastal protection projects in the Nile Delta serve as a successful model for adapting to climate change, focusing on protecting citizens and infrastructure. He highlighted the significant challenges posed by climate change and rising sea levels, particularly to river delta coastal areas like the Nile Delta.Coastal protection efforts are crucial for securing infrastructure and agricultural lands behind these protection works, preventing shoreline retreat in severely eroded regions, and restoring beaches lost to erosion. These measures also contribute to stabilizing the coastal zones where protection works are underway. The report also covered field visits by Shore Protection Authority officials and an international consultancy team to five priority coastal sites: west and east of the Rosetta Branch outlet, the Burullus area, east of the Damietta Branch outlet, and the El-Deeba area in Damietta and Port Said. These sites were selected based on several criteria from nine assessed locations. The field visits aimed to evaluate the existing technical, natural, and environmental conditions and the challenges and opportunities at each site. This evaluation is a step towards identifying the most suitable sustainable protection alternatives for each location.
