Mashat: Economic Stability, Private Sector Reform Key to Sustainable Development

Algiers: Minister of Planning, Economic Development and International Cooperation Rania Al-Mashat highlighted that macroeconomic stability is essential for growth, but must be paired with structural reforms to empower the private sector. Her remarks came during the Governors' Roundtable at the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) 50th Annual Meetings in Algiers.According to State Information Service Egypt, Mashat stressed the need for clear national strategies to engage the private sector and move toward sustainable development amid global economic volatility. She called for a 'positive reform cycle' beginning with economic reforms that lead to structural stability and improved development outcomes.Middle-income countries, she noted, face limited fiscal space, growing debt burdens, and a need for private sector investment to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. Innovation and entrepreneurship, she emphasized, are vital to overcoming these barriers, she added.Minister Mashat also advocated for proactive de bt management and innovative financing tools such as debt-for-development swaps, referencing the upcoming global financing conference in Seville. She concluded by urging support for environmental investments, concessional finance for the private sector, and stronger South-South cooperation to share successful development models among emerging economies.The roundtable brought together IsDB Governors to discuss three major themes: rethinking financial strategies for structural resilience, strengthening multilateral cooperation, and the role of Islamic financial institutions in achieving sustainable development. Participants also explored ways to enhance regional integration and promote trade amidst the current challenges facing global commerce.The event aimed to strengthen strategic dialogue among IsDB Governors on development priorities and global economic challenges, and to shape a unified vision on the IsDB Group's future role in fostering productive development partnerships that align with emerging glob al shifts.
