Irrigation Ministry Advances Solar Energy Integration in Water Facilities

Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam announced the ministry's initiative to integrate renewable energy systems across its infrastructure, with a specific focus on water pumping stations. This move aligns with national strategies aimed at sustainable development and enhancing energy efficiency.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam shared these insights following his review of a report from Murad Ghali, the Head of the Mechanical and Electrical Department. The report detailed the installation of solar panel systems spanning approximately 700 square meters across two stations, achieving a production capacity of about 87 kilowatts. This renewable energy initiative helps to fulfill a portion of the stations' electricity requirements while minimizing dependence on traditional energy sources.

The minister emphasized that this project is part of a broader ministry plan to convert water pumping stations into "Green 2.0 Stations" that utilize solar energy in place of fossil fuels. This transition is expected to alleviate the burden on Egypt's electricity grid and reduce carbon emissions significantly.

Sewilam also highlighted the ministry's commitment to involving young engineers and emerging leaders in the development of water infrastructure. He noted that the expansion of solar energy usage is crucial to Egypt's green transition and its strategic efforts to combat climate change.
