Foreign Ministry Follows Up on Migrant Boat Sinking En Route to Greece

Cairo: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates said it is following up on the sinking of an irregular migration boat that departed from a neighboring country heading to Greece on December 7, 2025, carrying 34 migrants of various nationalities, including 14 Egyptian nationals who lost their lives.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the ministry issued a statement on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, detailing that immediately upon receiving information about the incident, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty instructed the Egyptian Embassy in Greece to promptly communicate at the highest level with Greek authorities. The aim was to provide all possible assistance to those rescued from the vessel.

He also directed the embassy to expedite the repatriation of the victims' bodies after the completion of legal procedures. The Egyptian Embassy in Athens has been in contact with the victims' families to arrange the transfer of the bodies to Egypt.

The ministry renewed its appeal to citizens not to fall prey to irregular migration networks, in order to safeguard their lives, and to adhere to legal pathways for entering foreign countries through valid visas, so as to avoid the recurrence of such tragic incidents. The ministry extended its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the painful incident.
