FM Lauds IAEA’s Technical Support for Egypt, Urges Diplomacy to Ease Middle East Tensions

Vienna: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty lauded the technical support provided by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for Egypt under its technical cooperation program, describing it as a key pillar in advancing the country's peaceful nuclear program.

According to State Information Service Egypt, during a meeting with IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi at the agency's headquarters in Vienna, Abdelatty said this support has been instrumental in implementing the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, backing research reactors and qualifying national cadres. The Minister expressed appreciation for the close cooperation and ongoing coordination between Egypt and the IAEA, highlighting Grossi's recent participation in the reactor pressure vessel installation ceremony for the second nuclear unit at the El Dabaa nuclear plant as a reflection of the strategic partnership between the two sides in the peaceful use of nuclear energy.

They also exchanged views on the escalating situation in the Middle East, with Abdelatty reviewing Egypt's intensive diplomatic efforts and contacts with regional and international parties aimed at de-escalating tensions and containing the crisis, stressing that political and diplomatic solutions remain the only viable path to resolving conflicts. He also underscored the importance of avoiding any steps that could further inflame tensions or widen the conflict, warning of the serious consequences such developments could have for regional security and stability, as well as international trade, global supply chains and energy markets.

For his part, Grossi praised the close partnership between the IAEA and Egypt, commending the progress achieved in implementing the El Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant project, which he described as one of Africa's leading peaceful nuclear energy projects. He also praised Egypt's role in promoting regional security and stability, as well as its efforts to reduce tensions and support diplomatic solutions to regional crises.
