Cairo: Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad emphasized the crucial role nature reserves play in protecting biodiversity, preserving natural ecosystems, and enhancing efforts to combat climate change. Awad's remarks were made during activities organized by Wadi El Gemal-Hamata National Park in the Red Sea Governorate to celebrate World Environment Day 2026. The event gathered attendees from various sectors, including government agencies, civil society organizations, private-sector partners, residents, students, and tourists.
According to State Information Service Egypt, the activities featured beach and underwater clean-up campaigns, environmental awareness initiatives, and educational programs aimed at safeguarding marine ecosystems and natural resources. A significant highlight was the planting of 1,000 mangrove seedlings across several areas, part of ongoing efforts to restore coastal ecosystems. Mangrove forests play a vital role in protecting shorelines, supporting wildlife habitats, and absorbing carbon emissions.
Awad stated that these initiatives are designed to boost environmental awareness, foster community involvement, protect natural resources, and support sustainable development goals.
