Egypt Reaffirms Red Sea Governance Belongs to Littoral States

Egypt: Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty affirmed, during a phone call on Friday 3/7/2026 with Eritrea's Minister of Foreign Affairs Osman Saleh, that the security and governance of the Red Sea remain the responsibility of the littoral states. Abdelatty stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Red Sea coastal states, reaffirming Egypt's full support for Eritrea in safeguarding its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

According to State Information Service Egypt, the phone conversation also addressed ways to strengthen bilateral relations and coordinate positions on issues of mutual interest. Minister Abdelatty praised the growing momentum in Egyptian-Eritrean relations, commending the outcomes of Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki's successful visit to Egypt, which has contributed to advancing cooperation between the two countries across various fields.

He also expressed Egypt's aspiration to increase bilateral trade, encourage joint investments, and support the participation of the Egyptian private sector in the Eritrean market. In the same context, the two ministers exchanged views on the latest developments in the Horn of Africa.

Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's support for national state institutions and for preserving the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the countries in the region. Abdelatty also reiterated Egypt's rejection of any unilateral measures that could undermine the sovereignty of states or weaken the foundations of regional stability.
