Cairo: Egypt has increased crude oil supplies to refineries and improved their operating efficiency, helping raise domestic production of petroleum products and reduce the country's import bill, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi said on Saturday, August 22, 2026. Badawi made the remarks during the general assembly of Alexandria Petroleum Company, which reviewed the company's results for the 2025/2026 fiscal year.According to State Information Service Egypt, Reham Mohamed, Chairperson of Alexandria Petroleum Company, stated that the volume of crude oil refined during the year increased by 9%, supported by higher supplies during the second half of the fiscal year. The refinery's operating rate rose from 70% in the first quarter to 83% during the final two quarters. This increase resulted in higher production of several petroleum products compared with the previous year, with liquefied petroleum gas output rising 46%, fuel oil increasing 25%, jet fuel and kerosene climbing 16%, naphtha u sed in gasoline production increasing 9%, and diesel output rising 6%.Badawi emphasized that Alexandria Petroleum plays a vital role in Egypt's refining industry by supplying feedstock to other refining and petrochemical companies, allowing them to produce higher-value products locally rather than relying on imports. The company is also upgrading two steam boilers at its lubricants complex at a total cost of 400 million Egyptian pounds. Work on the first boiler has been completed, while the second is expected to be finished within days.Reham further noted that upgrading the boilers instead of replacing them is expected to save the company more than 2 billion pounds. The project will also reduce natural gas consumption and carbon emissions while supporting continued production of lubricants and waxes that would otherwise need to be imported. Finally, Badawi affirmed that Egypt will continue working to increase refinery efficiency and domestic petroleum production while maintaining product quality and safe ty standards.
