Egypt and China Strengthen Water Cooperation with Focus on Smart Management and Technology

Cairo: Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Hani Sewilam underscored the longstanding relationship between Egypt and China, which began with the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1956. He emphasized the ongoing cooperation in the water sector, particularly leveraging China's extensive expertise in managing large river basins.

According to State Information Service Egypt, Sewilam made these remarks during a meeting with Changjiang Water Resources Commission chairman Liao Zhiwei. The meeting focused on enhancing joint cooperation in water management through modern technology, smart management, and digitalization. A memorandum of understanding is set to be signed between the Changjiang Water Resources Commission and the National Water Research Center, marking a significant milestone in this collaboration.

Discussions also included the use of drones in water distribution and cooperation in monitoring and evaluating water facilities. Sewilam highlighted ongoing projects to develop the water management system within the Ismailia Canal and its branches, noting that Chinese expertise in digital twin technology and smart management could be beneficial.

The minister stressed the importance of opening new channels for cooperation, knowledge exchange, and technology transfer. This includes remote sensing techniques, hydraulic and hydrological modeling, advanced rainfall forecasting systems, and integrating various data sources such as ground measurements and satellite data.

Liao expressed China's willingness to deepen cooperation and facilitate technical visits with specialists from the Egyptian ministry, aiming to enhance knowledge transfer and technological exchange.
